Latest Update: The 2021 Mazda CX-9 has gone for sale in the United States and this stylish new SUV comes with an updated design as well as interior. The cabin is now equipped with 10.3-inch infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with other features like tri-zone climate control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. This version is yet to reach Singapore and hence, for now, we have to make do with the 2020 variant.
Mazda CX-9 Price and Variants: The Mazda CX-9 sports utility vehicle (SUV) is available in two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options in the Singapore market. The price of the car starts at $150,888.
Mazda CX-9 Engine and Mileage: The CX-9 is hauled by a SkyActiv-G, turbocharged, 4-cylinder, 2.5-litre petrol motor, mated to a 6-speed Activemativ transmission. The motor outputs 231 PS maximum power and 420 Nm peak torque. The mileage returned by the car is around 10.8 kmpl.

The Mazda CX-9 is the flagship SUV from the Japanese carmaker, which has come out as a good option in the category of full-size luxury SUVs. The Mazda CX-9 is available in two variants – Luxury and Super Luxury. While the Luxury variant is available in both two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, the Super Luxury variant is being offered in only all-wheel drive. The paint schemes for the Mazda CX-9 are Soul Red Crystal, Deep Crystal Blue, Machine Grey, Titanium Flash Mica, Snowflake White, Sonic Silver, and Jet Black Mica.
Mazda CX-9 Exterior
The Mazda CX-9 breaks the monotony of the conventional big block SUV designing and has a super sleek design which makes it look an SUV from the future. The CX-9 possesses all the traditional design elements of a Mazda vehicle but adds in few of its individualistic design cues.
The Mazda CX-9 has a long bonnet that is styled like that of a sedan, which ends up in a wide and big grille that tapers down with horizontal slats. The tapered boundaries of the grille on the sides are finished in chrome, which extends all the way above the headlamps. The headlamps look very sleek and have all the LED elements within them. Another distinctive design element is the long and sleek chrome garnish at the bottom of the front bumper.
The Mazda CX-9 has a poised stance when viewed from the sides, while not having a high ground clearance. The rounded wheel arches and subtle looking side door panels, with door-mounted rearview mirrors and chrome finish on the bottom edge of door panels and window waistline make it look premium.
At the back too, the Mazda CX-9 looks very unique, with a tapered rear windscreen and aerodynamic rear roof spoiler. Another couple of design elements that make it look premium are bird eye-shaped LED tail lamps and a sleek chrome lining in between, across the width of the boot lid.
CX-9 Ride & Handling
The Mazda CX-9 might not be a proper out and out SUV with off-road prowess, but it still manages to do mild off-roading. Still, a higher ground clearance would have been appreciated. The suspension feels softly sprung which gives it a very comfortable rode quality suitable for urban settings. Though, the space in the third row is very limited and is best suited only for kids.
Mazda CX-9 Engine & Fuel Consumption
Powering the Mazda CX-9 is a 2.5-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine, which might sound a bit small for a vehicle of this size. However, the engine produces a healthy power output of 170 PS and a peak torque output of 420 Nm. Mated to a conventional 6-speed torque converter, the engine is available with both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations.
CX-9 Braking & Safety
For a premium full-sized SUV, the Mazda CX-9 is healthily equipped with top-notch safety features like front, side and curtain airbags, dynamic stability control, traction control, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, around view monitor, blind-spot monitoring system, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist system, smart city brake support, driver attention alert, and adaptive cruise control.
Mazda CX-9 Verdict
The Mazda CX-9 is not a viable option for those who want a traditional SUV with serious off-road prowess. However, the sleekness and urban appeal of the Mazda CX-9, along with the impeccable fit and finish and luxurious appeal on the inside, makes it an excellent option for those who prefer to be chauffeur-driven most of the times.
