The German carmaker, BMW, is known for producing cars that drive well; much of that owed to the models traditionally being rear-wheel drive. However, that changed with the launch of the 2 Series Active Tourer and the 2 Series Gran Tourer, both of which are built as rear-wheel drives. The 2 Series Active Tourer was launched back in 2015 and later got updated in 2018. It is a 5-seater premium MPV, based on a playful mini hatchback. The dynamic silhouette with the horizontal crease and the contoured side skirts give the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer a sporty and modern character. The interior is a perfect combo of style and functionality. The premium finish can be noticed everywhere, from the dash to the seats. Plus, there’s a lot of space inside the cabin. The car is offered in two variants - the 216i and the 225xe. Both variants are powered by a 1499cc, 1.5-litre, petrol engine; the base model produces 80 HP maximum power between 4,300-6,500 rpm and 190 Nm peak torque between 1,380-3,800 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission system. The Driving Experience Control allows you to switch between various driving modes at the touch of a button. The 2 Series Active Tourer starts retailing at SGD 150,888 and competes against the likes of the Mercedes Benz B Class, the Toyota Prius Plus, the Toyota Previa, the Honda Odyssey, and the Nissan Elgrand.

Inside the cabin, you get the typical BMW feel. High-quality material and design elegance can be spotted all around. The headroom and legroom are good enough for even the tallest folks at the front. At the back, you’ll find the Active Tourer doesn’t have three individual rear seats, which means that while headroom and legroom are generous for adults sitting on the outside seats, a third adult sitting in the middle seat will be more of a squeeze. The rear bench splits 40:20:40 as standard and slides back and forth in a 60:40 configuration allowing brilliant flexibility. The 10.25-inches touchscreen infotainment unit allows you to toggle between the menu options. You can connect your smartphones to the system using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto; the BMW ConnectedDrive along with the intelligent driver assistance systems of the BMW Personal CoPilot offers a wide range of support to your journeys.

The 2 Series Active Tourer is a real eye-catcher. The large kidney grille, the front bumper with specific design elements in black high gloss, and the unending inlets at the front pose a very stern look. At the sides, the horizontal creases and the well-shaped side skirts provide a sporty look. At the back, one can spot the twin exhaust pipes, LED tail lamps and black high gloss rear bumper. There’s a large list of available colour schemes - Alpine White, Black, Black Sapphire Metallic, Glacier Silver Metallic, Imperial Blue Brilliant Effect Metallic, Mineral White Metallic, Mineral Grey Metallic, Sparkling Brown Metallic, Flamenco Red Brilliant Effect Metallic, Mediterranean Blue Metallic, Sunset Orange Metallic, Jucaro Beige Metallic.
BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Ride & Handling
The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is still good to drive for an MPV. Based on a Mini hatchback, the car has a gripping front end and direct steering; however, there’s significantly more body roll to contend with when pushing it hard around tight bends. The intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system smoothly and variably distributes drive power to the front and rear wheels for maximum traction, driving dynamics and safety in every driving situation. The optional Variable sport steering with Servotronic adds to the comfortable handling. The adaptive suspension combines driving dynamics and ride comfort with a high degree of safety.
2 Series Active Tourer Engine & Fuel Consumption
Both the BMW 216i and the 225xe get power from a 1,499cc, three-cylinders, four-valves, 1.5-litre, petrol engine. The 216i makes 80 hp maximum power between 4,300-6,500 rpm and 190 Nm peak torque between 1,380-3,800 rpm, while the 225xe delivers 100 hp max power at 4,400-6,000 rpm and peak torque of 220 Nm at 1,250-4,300 rpm. The 225xe comes equipped with a lithium-ion battery that has a growth capacity of 10 kWh; it has an electric range of 47 km. The electric engine is good enough to make 70 hp max power at 4,500 rpm and peak torque of 165 Nm at 4,500 rpm. The combined power and torque of the system is 165 hp and 385 Nm respectively.
BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Braking & Safety
Braking duties are performed by single-piston floating-calliper disc brakes at both ends on the 2 Series Active Tourer, with ABS support. Highlights of safety features include the adaptive LED headlights, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), intelligent emergency call, head airbags, traffic jam assistant, and approach control warning system.
