The Coupe segment may be a small niche segment in Singapore, but the German automaker is keen to cater to this segment. The latest addition to the BMW 2 Series range was launched in early 2020. Interestingly, the 2 Series Gran Coupe has remarkably little to do with the 2 Series Coupe. It actually shares most genetic material with the 1 Series hatchback. The new BMW 2 Series represents the new generation of compact BMW coupes. It gets distinct and eye-catching frameless doors along with a slightly sloping roofline and a sporty rear with LED taillights. The interior is also impressive with exclusive design details, high-quality materials and an optional fully-digital cockpit and central display, both of 10.25 inches each. Features such as the Panorama glass roof lend the sporty interior an exceptional feeling of spaciousness. There are two models on offer - the 218i (Luxury and M Sport) and the M 235i Drive Gran Coupe. Unlike the original, rear-wheel drive 2 Series Coupe, the base model Gran Coupe is built on a front-wheel drive platform. The base model is powered by a 1499cc, three-cylinder, four-valves engine, while the M235i gets power from the 1998cc, inline, four-valves engine. The 218i Gran Coupe Luxury Line is priced at S$160,888 including Certificate of Entitlement (COE). S$3,000 more will get you into a 218i Gran Coupe M Sport. The M235i xDrive Gran Coupe retails at S$ $249,888 with COE. The obvious competitor to the BMW 218i Gran Coupe would be the Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 and the three-pointed star’s AMG counterparts.
The cabin is a familiar BMW one; it’s almost the same to that of the 1 series. The interior is a delightful combination of sporty modern ambience and innovative features. The fascia is cleanly styled and ergonomic, but the mirror-image C-shaped speedometer and rev counter dials are a bit hard to read at a glance. The illuminated interior trim finishers that run along the driver and passenger doors, as well as the instrument panel, are a visual delight. The cabin is bright and airy, and there is decent space all round, except for rear headroom which is slightly compromised by that stylishly falling roofline. The luggage compartment is deep and long.
The 2 Series Gran Coupe has a clear sedan profile. The similarity between the looks of the 2 Series Gran Coupe and the 1 Series is obvious even at a glance. Except for the slight differences in headlamp and grille shapes, the cars’ front ends are identical; the 2 Series Gran Coupe has the same long front overhang, bluff nose, massive “kidney” grilles and high bonnet line as its hatchback sibling. The dynamic free-form trims and distinctively shaped rear apron along with the prominent shoulder line flaunts a dynamic tail. One of the most surprising design change is the absence of the “Hofmeister kink” - that distinctive curve of the rear side window where it meets the C-pillar. Prior to the 2 Series Gran Coupe, it has been a styling trademark of every BMW sedan since the 1960s.
Driving a 2 Series Gran Coupe is a smooth and comfortable experience. The steering is pleasingly quick and nicely-weighted; it feels light on its feet yet planted. Damping is well-judged, neither too firm nor too flexible, thanks to the adaptive suspensions. The suspension setup consists a single-joint spring strut axle in lightweight aluminium-steel construction at the front and a multi-link axle in lightweight steel construction with separate spring and damper configuration at the rear.
Under the hood of the 218i Gran Coupe you’ll find the highly rated 1499cc, 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbo engine which does service in several other BMW models. It delivers 140 hp of max power between 4,600-6,500 rpm and peak torque of 220 Nm between 1,480 and 4,200 rpm. This power is transferred to the wheels using a 7-speed double-clutch. On the other hand, the M235i xDrive Gran Coupe draws power from a 1,998cc, inline, four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine that makes 306 hp max power and 450 Nm max torque which gets to the wheels through an eight-speed gearshift paddle transmission.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe comes equipped with larger M-sport disc brakes with 4-pot callipers at the front. In addition to this braking setup, the coupe is loaded with both basic and advanced safety features some of which are - brake assist, vehicle stability control system, engine immobilizer, crash sensor, Cornering Brake Control (CBC), electric parking brake with auto hold, DTC (Dynamic Traction Control), DBC (Dynamic Brake Control), dry braking function, fading compensation, Start-Off Assistant, and EDLC (Electronic Differential Lock Control).
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe offers a right mix of luxury, comfort and performance. The engine is refined and delivers excellent performance, the cabin quality is superior, and it has a long list of features to top it up. If you’re looking to enter the luxury car segment for the first time, this entry-level sedan is a perfect choice for you.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is an impressive all-round package. The car is packed with features and supremely comfortable to drive. If looks could kill, then this is the car you should buy. This is also one of the best front-wheel-drive cars on the road. The car’s styling is very unique. You’ll not see another car of this design
I had the opportunity of driving the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe a while back and I must admit that I am very impressed with this car. The Gran Coupe features a flowing roofline that ends in the fastback-like rear. Even the kidney-grille of this sedan looks very attractive and aggressive at the same time. For a six-foot person like
