BMW 2 Series Convertible Review 2024

BMW introduced the updated models of its Coupe and Gran Coupe in the international market earlier this year. However, the German carmaker is in no mood to introduce these new variants, or an updated 2 Series Convertible, in the Singapore market. The market of convertibles is a niche, and the demand for premium soft tops in Singapore has been on a decline for the past few years now. This has forced BMW not to introduce an updated 2 Series Convertible. The currently available 2 Series Convertible is offered in two variants in Singapore - the 218i Sport and the M240i. The BMW 2 Series Convertible is a stylish, comfortable and elegant soft-top that proves to be quite rewarding to drive. The facelifted model, which was launched in 2018, got minor updates in comparison to its predecessor. A set of new standard bi-LED headlights, a slightly wider kidney grille, and reworked rear lights were some of the noteworthy changes. The new tiled iDrive infotainment system was added to the interior, along with an updated instrumental panel. Both variants are equipped with a petrol engine, which is decent enough to deliver good performance, with and without the roof. The soft top can be easily removed with the touch of a button, and the process happens incredibly quickly. The open-air drive is an experience in itself. The BMW 2 Series Convertible starts retailing at SGD 177,888 and goes up to SGD 257,888. Though the market of convertibles in Singapore is not that huge, some notable competitors to the 2 Series Convertible are the Alfa Romeo Giulia, the Mini Cooper S Convertible, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Subaru WRX STI.

BMW 2 Series Convertible Interior & Features

The last updated model received most of its upgrades in the interior. Inside the 2 Series Convertible, you will be graced with high-quality material, comfortable occupancy, and practical features. The new tiled iDrive infotainment system allows you to connect to the soft-top using your smartphone, and it displays other relevant info on the screen; it is intuitive and quick. The instrument panel was also updated during the last facelift; it now sports a much modern look and feel. On the whole, the interior feels sleeker and more refined. The noise insulation is very good with the roof out, and manageable even with the roof down. The interior features include Tachometer, electronic multi tripmeter, leather seats, leather steering wheel, digital clock, digital Odometer, electrically adjustable seats, Driving Experience Control Eco, and centrally mounted fuel tank.

2 Series Convertible Exterior

The looks of the 2 Series Convertible are head-turning. It has that sporty characteristic about its design that grabs attention. At the front, it has the signature BMW grille and sharp headlights with DRLs. The distinctive alloy wheels add another dimension to its looks by complementing the paint schemes. Simply push a button, and the soft top gets down in no time; with or without the roof, the 2 Series Convertible is eye candy. Towards the rear, you can spot the sleek taillights and twin exhaust pipes. There are some elegant paint schemes to choose from, which will spoil you for a choice.

BMW 2 Series Convertible Ride & Handling

The BMW 2 Series Convertible is a nimble soft-top that you won't find challenging to maneuver, both on city roads and highways. It's not a power giant, but it is not meant to be one. The convertible is a car that should be equally rewarding at 30 kmph or 90kmph, and in this regard, the 2 Series Convertible indeed shines. It is composed and dynamic enough to chuck into corners with fair eagerness. The electronic power steering is a real boon and helps you navigate through challenging corners without a sweat. BMW has equipped the 2 Series Convertible with M Sport Suspension at both ends to mitigate the jerks and bumps.

2 Series Convertible Engine & Fuel Consumption

Powering the 2 Series Convertible is a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine that makes 138 PS maximum power and 220 Nm peak torque. Power is transferred to the wheels using 6-speed and 8-speed manual setup, which are optional to choose. The power figures seem relatively modest, but the 2 Series Convertible offers more action than the numbers. The company claimed mileage figures stand at 18.9 kmpl.

BMW 2 Series Convertible Braking & Safety

Ventilated discs at both ends perform braking duties on the 2 Series Convertible. These ABS brakes automatically sense when a tire has stopped rotating, under extreme braking, and it modulates the brake pressure to allow the rotation of tires. Notable safety features include passenger airbag, driver airbag, Brake Assist, EBD, Vehicle Stability Control System, rear seat belts, seat belt warning, day and night rearview mirror, rear camera, crash sensor, engine check warning, Tyre Pressure Monitor System (TPMS), front impact beams, side-impact beams, and door ajar warning.

2 Series Convertible Verdict

The 2 Series Convertible is fairly a niche product; but, it is a pretty sweet driving car. It is nimble, light-footed, and a beautiful, sporty convertible. To be honest, soft-tops have a reputation for being slightly underwhelming cars to drive, but the 2 Series Convertible performs entirely respectably. It's no sports car, but it's composed, dynamic and offers the best of a convertible.
