Daytona SP3: The homage to Ferrari's sports prototypes from the '60s

Following a long wait, Ferrari has finally introduced its most potent pure combustion production road car of all time, the Daytona SP3. It is the third production under its bespoke Icona range of hyper-expensive supercars after the Monza twins, SP1 and SP2.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will Ferrari Daytona SP3 will launch?

The deliveries of the Ferrari Daytona SP3 will start at the end of 2022.
  • The latest addition to the family allegedly pays homage to Ferrari's sports prototypes from the '60s – specifically the 330 P3/4, 330 P4, and 412 P that finished one-two-three at the 1967 Daytona 24 Hour.

Unlike the front-engined Monza twins, the Daytona SP3 is based on a mid-engined carbon fiber platform instead of being modified from a present model. Its core is an improved version of the 812 Competizione's sumptuous 6.5-litre V12 engine, which has had a faint tickle in a potential rise to 829 bhp, 10 bhp up on a Competizione.

The F140HC V12 further modifies the Competizione's F140HB unit, which benefits from low friction coated pistons, 40 percent lighter titanium con-rods, new cylinder heads, and sliding finger supporters to reinstate the customary items employed in the 812 Superfast. There's more the Competizione's fresh channel manifold and a lever that's three percent lighter.

The Daytona SP3 gets new fuel pumps, ignition systems, and injection are also borrowed from the Comp, along with minute modifications to the car's ECU, it can produce an 829 bhp peak at 9250 rpm and gather up an added 4 lb-ft of torque, now 514 lb-ft, produced at 7250 rpm, more than the car it acquires its engine from.

There are dive planes buried on the edges of the front bumper, turbine-style alloy wheels, underfloor vortex generators, a large rear wing, an extensive diffuser, and, interestingly, floor "chimneys" directing air upwards towards the rear fenders. All this allows the car to produce maximum downforce with minimal drag.

This being the apex of Ferrari's lineup, it is apparent the Daytona SP3 won't come cheap. With deliveries to be commenced at the end of 2022, it is expected to cost €2-million in Italy.
